Lines
Exploring Lines
Horizontal, Vertical and Diagonal lines
1. What is a reciprocal line and how is it used in, "Henri Cartier-Bresson. ROMANIA. 1975. In a train"? A reciprocal line intersects at 90 degrees with another line in the photograph. The two main subject create reciprocal implied lines. The reciprocal line brings focus on the intersecting point in the middle and brings attention towards the couple’s faces which is where you want it to draw focus.
2. In, "Henri Cartier-Bresson. USA. 1947. Cape Cod, Mass, Independence Day", how does the hand gesture add to the energy and movement of the diagonal lines? The hand gesture add to the energy and movement of the diagonal lines because it almost becomes a diagonal arrow. The hand shows the direction the other diagonal lines behind her are moving in. She has the American flag proudly around her neck showing strength and power.
3. In, "Rene Burri. BRAZIL. 1960. Rio de Janeiro. Ministry of Health", how do the diagonal lines create multiple directions for the eye to follow? The diagonal lines create multiple directions for the eye to follow by having the men gaze diagonally towards the women as the walk by in a diagonal manner. The lines cross each other allowing your eyes to follow their movements.
Curved Lines
1. In, "Abbas / GREAT BRITAIN. Belfast. A wall crumbles down after having been set on fire, presumably by the IRA", how do the curved lines add to the suspense/tension of the image? The curved lines add to the suspense/tension of the image because the two curves meet at a point in the center of the line and the image creates a feeling of suspense and as if the photo is alive.
2. In, "Henri Cartier-Bresson / France, 1932", How do the curved lines add movement to the frame? The curved lines add movement to the frame because the curving lines that point towards the direction of the moving subject (bicyclist) make the subject look like it is moving really fast.
3. In, "Eric Kim / Santa Monica, 2011", How are the curved lines also creating framing in the photograph? The curved lines also create framing in the photograph because the curved lines from the escalator frame the subject by being on both sides of the subject.
Leading Lines
1. In, "Josef Koudelka : CZECHOSLOVAKIA. 1963. Slovakia. Jarabina", how does the leading line direct your eye? The leading line directs your eye because it leads up to the man in the front of the photo. It directs your eye to him.
2.In, "Henri Cartier-Bresson FRANCE. 1932. Marseille. The Allée du Prado", how does the change of camera angle effect the composition? The change of camera angle effects the composition because the composition would be completely different and the line would't lead to the subject of the photo.
3. In, "Constantine Manos. USA. 1988. Florida. Daytona Beach. “American Color”, describe three movements that the lines draw for eye? The three movements that the lines draw for eye are the arrow pointing towards the "New York Stly Pizza" sign, the "One Way" sign, and the direction man's eyes are looking towards.

This is my favorite image from the group of examples showing different line usages. This image uses the technique of a leading line. The water fall in the center of the photo creates a line that leads the viewer's eye down towards the flowers and rocks underneath the water fall. This image shows the natural beauty found in nature with a water fall and surrounding trees and plants. This photo also has curved lines which are seen with the dirt path leading out of the cave and the top of the cave where the water is falling from.
